The Candidate - "What we do now?"

Scenaristul filmului a fost implicat in campania reala a unui candidatului pentru nominalizarea democrata la presedentie din 1968 (impotriva lui Nixon). Toate frustrarile sale din campanie le-a pus cumva in acest scenariu (apreciat foarte mult de critici prin Oscar si multe alte premii).  In acea epoca , toti candidatii democrati erau mai mult sau mai putin mostenitorii politicii initiate de John F. Kennedy. Mai putin fratele sau Robert F. Kennedy , care era poate originalul : el a fost sursa , creierul si inima multor actiuni ale lui JFK. Oricum, Robert a sfarsit asasinat , chiar in acea campanie, chiar in ziua cand devenise clar ca va castiga nominalizarea democrata.

Bill McKay (personajul interpretat de Redford) are multe in comun cu JFK: este tanar, inteligent, din familie bogata, democrat cu vederi liberale si are un tata cu mare influenta. Ce e interesant este faptul ca incercand sa creeze un personaj in genul lui JFK, au reusit unul care aduce si cu viitorul presentinte Clinton:  pe langa faptul ca il cheama tot Bill , este la fel de charismatic, are aceleasi mici “accidente” si ceea ce este cel mai interesant , adversarul sau are acelasi discurs (vom vedea mai departe).
Plot: Tanarului McKay, neimplicat in politica, i se propune de catre partidul democrat, prin vocea unui manager profesionist de campanii, sa candideze pentru un post in Senat, impotriva unui puternic contracandidat conservator.

Inevitabilul compromis

Dupa ce la inceput – cand nu avea sanse -  i se spusese ca poate sa faca ce vrea si cum vrea, in momentul cand a inceput sa aibe o sansa, i s-a explicat ca este obligatoriu pentru a materializa acea sansa sa castige bunavointa si acceptarea unor personaje puternice dar controversate. A reactionat dur prima data:

Floyd J. Starkey: I think you'll find we have a lot in common.
Bill McKay: I don't think we have shit in common

Dar a trebuit sa faca inevitabilul compromis: era o decizie “go / no go”.

Conservatorism pentru eternitate

Iata discursul lui Crocker Jarmon (foarte sugestiva sonoritatea numelui), contracandidatul conservator:

For me this country has never been so strong. The test of a strong is how he faces the difficulties. 
 When I hear the barking and the hooting of those ...  who want to destroy our system...I remember the days the great Roman Empire.  They talked to know what vice legalize.  The result ... was a massacre that took near-end nearest civilization. I'm not saying that's what ... happens if the people do to me not return to the Senate.
I promise you this: 
I will continue ... to upholding the philosophy which made the greatness of this country... which is more necessary than ever ... if we consider the future with hope and confidence.  I hope this because I believe in America. I think our greatest moment lies in the future.

Pe scurt; avem o tara mare, frumoasa si puternica, asa ca nu vom schimba nimic, pentru ca alfel , nu-i asa, ii vom afecta fumusetea si puterea... " to upholding the philosophy which made the greatness of this country": o fraza asematoare a fost folosita in campania din 1992 de George Bush Sr. , in timp ce candida impotriva lui Bill Clinton. Unele lucruri nu se schimba !!!

"There must be a better way!"

Iata ce raspunde McKay discursului conservator de mai sus:

It is important to know the subjects we have not discussed. We have ignored the fact that the company ... is divided by fear, hatred, and violence. If we do not speak of what the company ... we cannot change it. For example, decay that destroys cities.  We have the means to stop it and do not use them. 
Why? 
We have not talked about race, poverty.  Briefly, we talked none of these diseases ... which may ignite this country.  And it would be better to do. Get it out in the open air and confront ... before it is too late.  It was necessary that you do, eh?

Frumos, nu? Oare cate s-au realizat din 1972 si pana azi? Decaderea oraselor - a continuat, la fel si celelalte.

Increderea

Interesant este deasemenea ca McKay isi pune la indoiala propriul program si propria viziune (sau in fapt legatura acestora cu ce va face).

Iata discursul lui public:

Remember that unemployment is 8% and only ... the official figure. In reality, it is 12%.  Think about it, the country's largest, The most powerful country ... does not ensure full employment ... do not feed the hungry ... lives out its poor. We can no longer play young against old, black against white! Not newspapers who will decide, but you!There is a better way!  The time is past. There is a better way.

Si iata o parodie amara pe care o face, tot el, in particular:

I tell you!

Can more ... can play the black against the old ... young against the poor. This country can not house its homeless ... feed the hungry.They want a government the people ... populated by the people.Our faith ... compassion ... courage on the gridiron. Indifference basic ... which made the greatness of this country. And election day ... Election Day ... we do not run away.  Vote one time ... Vote twice ... for Bill McKay you middle-class honkies ! [and he begins making gaga noises].

"What we do now?" - "You lose"

Iata primul dialog dintre managerul de campanie si posibilul candidat Bill McKay.

Bill McKay: I can say, do what I want,  want to go where I am, eh?

Lucas: Yes, voila your warranty. 
Lucas: YOU LOSE (nota mea:  scrie aceste cuvinte pe o cutie de chibrituri si i-o da)

Bill McKay: I lose?

Lucas:  Yes.  So why worry?  You're free,  you have no chance, then say what you want. It's just between you and the public. 

Iata si ultimul dialog dintre cei doi - McKay castigase, dar ... il scoate din aglomeratia serbarii victoriei pe managerul de campanie si il intreaba:

Bill McKay: What do we do now?

Lucas:  What?

Sa recapitulam: partidul democrat isi trimite un manager de campanie profesionist la tanarul McKay sa-i propuna partcipirea la cursa pentru senat. McKay, oarecum nedumerit, vrea sa stie ce o sa faca el in politica - atentie (!) deocamdata nu vede din asta decat campania . Managerul are un truc magic drept raspuns: oricum n-ai sanse, YOU LOSE! , asa ca poti sa spui ce vrei , poti sa faci ce vrei , e numai intre tine si public. Si asa a fost...in campanie! Odata aceasta castigata, ce va face McKay? Ce vom face "NOI", intreaba el. Bineinteles, managerul nu are nici un raspuns, sarcina lui era doar sa castige alegerile. 

Putem sa ne intrebam noi: ce va putea face Bill? Pai sunt doua cai; daca vrea sa se integreze si sa fie reales, trebuie sa uite propriile idei si sa tina minte toate datoriile si compromisurile facute inca din campanie. Daca vrea sa ramana cu discursul si ideile sale, ce poate face? E adevarat, a castigat, dar cei care l-au sprijinit, ii vor retrage acel sprijin si va fi izolat. Nu numai ca nu va mai fi ales a doua oara, dar in afara de functie, el nu a castigat nimic... s-a alaturat doar unor compromisuri vechi de cand lumea...Deci...

What do we do now? 

Raspunsul e cel de la inceput, chiar daca , aparent, ai castigat:  YOU LOSE!
